“Fabulous work. Martin evokes stunning atmosphere with really convincing shape, colour and tone. Terrific!”

La Motte, Jersey. The most southerly point of the British Isles under a brooding atmospheric morning sky

My approach

I am constantly amazed at how every new painting becomes a voyage to discover the unique atmosphere and mood of a place. My aim is to capture light and ‘ambience’, rather than slavishly copying details from what is before me.  I work from careful observation, sketches, photographs, memories and the painter’s greatest asset-informed imagination.  My style ranges from very loose and impressionistic to a more figurative approach, as I feel the subject requires. A representative selection of my work is here.

International collections

I am a professional contemporary marine, landscape and abstract artist, working in acrylics mainly on hand-primed board and canvas. My work is in international collections in Australia, Spain, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Bermuda and New Zealand and elsewhere, as well as the UK and Channel Islands. Having been based in Jersey for some years many of my paintings depict the shores of that island, and having now moved to Kent my portfolio is expanding to also include works that reflect my new location.

Latest work

Plemont Bay Jersey

Plemont Bay, on Jersey’s craggy and wild north coast is a mysterious, brooding place, accessible only by a long climb down from the high cliffs above. This painting uses a range of glazes and impasto work to achieve the drama of the fading winter light

A range of new works is available from Studio 18 in Jersey. I am presently preparing a portfolio of paintings to be made available in the UK. This may include some limited edition fine art prints.

Exhibition

A selection from my most recent solo exhibition at Studio 18, Jersey’s foremost contemporary art gallery, is here. To view the full collection, please contact Studio 18 in St Helier.
