I am a professional artist living and working in Jersey.I came to live in Jersey as a small child and grew up in the wilds of the St Ouen’s Bay area. This instilled in me an instinctive feel for the essence of the Jersey landscape. I was originally taught by the much revered Jersey artist Fred Sands RI, but I left the art class aged 15 because it was all adolescent boys-and there were girls in the Spanish class... I trained in Law and pursued other careers as a Probation Officer, Government Researcher and Church Minister before becoming a full time painter. Before turning professional I painted during evenings and weekends for many years. I have relentlessly studied both modern painters and also old masters for understanding and inspiration.
Influences
I have exhibited in numerous galleries in the UK, as well as in Jersey. My works, often large and bold contemporary interpretations of iconic Jersey scenes, are in the collections of both private and corporate clients. I am a fervent admirer of J.M.W. Turner (regarding him as the father of modern painting), I also greatly admire the work of more modern painters such as Edward Seago, Ken Howard RA (I have a signed print by kenhoward-how cool is that?!), John Yardley, Fred Cuming RA, Ian Houston, John Hammond NAPA and Tina Morgan SWA.
To me, painting is about atmosphere, mood and place. Light is everything-it is the artist’s job to capture it. People often say they want to be able to walk into a painting-it’s my job to paint in a way that enables them to do that.
I have featured in the media, including BBC news, both television and radio, and in the press.
I am proud to have been elected a member of NAPA (National Acrylic Painters Association).
I am married to Jackie and we have two adult children who live in London. Very shortly I will be a grandfather... yes, hard to believe I know, but there it is.
