Sources of inspiration and instruction

I have been painting seriously since November 1986. I know when I started exactly. If you want to know how I know that so precisely, here's the story.

Over the years I have been exposed to so many influences and resources I cannot begin to describe it all... sighs of relief all around, I hear!  But I can point aspiring painters to some useful articles, videos and books that will hopefully be of use. If you are looking for other pointers please get in touch. This section will grow and develop as time goes on, but in the meantime here is a selection of a few truly inspirational people.

Videos

John Hammond NAPA

John Hammond is one of my main inspirations. Here is a trailer for his teaching DVD. I have his book, 'Capturing Light in Acrylics'. Well worth the price.

Fred Cuming RA

Fred Cuming-in my opinion, Fred is one of the greatest living painters. His paintings are remarkable essays in light and the sheer handling of paint as a medium. Here is a film of him handling atmosphere.

Ken Howard RA

And here is a chance to see Ken Howard in action. His handling of light is legendary.

More resources will follow soon. Tell me what sort of thing you are looking for and I will try to get it onto this site.

Recommended reading

There are just so many art tuition books on the market. I have mentioned John Hammond's book already. Fred Cuming's book, 'A Figure in The Landscape' is not really a teaching book, but I recommend it as a valuable read for any serious artist.
