Learn to paint with Martin Bullivant

Would you enjoy the opportunity to be taught by a professional artist? If so then you can now join me in my studio at The Harbour Gallery to be taught how to paint. Many people assume they will never be able to paint and draw successfully. Thankfully this is far from true, and lessons can be a huge stepping stone to successful painting.

What is covered?

Breaking_Light_Over_La_Pulente

The medium I will ask that we use is acrylic-all my paintings are done using acrylic paint, and it is a quick drying, almost odourless paint that allows you to take a painting away immediately without waiting for days for it to dry (oil paintings can take months to dry). Plus we can clean brushes at the end of each lesson with just water, so you can spend your actual lesson painting and learning. It is the medium best suited to learning to paint with me.

At first I will discuss your chosen subject, which will be your own choice. You may want to pick seascapes, landscapes, still life or even abstract. I won't try to fit you into a mould-it is all about you finding how you paint.

Amongst many other things I will teach you about theories of colour, composition, and the importance of tonal values. But it will not be dry or 'academic'. Art is exciting!

What will you need?

For your first lesson, everything will be provided. Just bring yourself, your questions and any thoughts and ideas about painting. I will talk you through everything then that you might want to go to the art supplies shop and treat yourself to!

How long are the lessons?

I teach in hourly modules, so you can customise your own learning experience. If you are totally new to it we can can plan anything from a simple introduction to the basics, right through to a whole course.  If you are already an established painter you could have one or two more advanced sessions. That way you get to learn in your own way at your own pace.

I don't think I would be any good...

If I had a pound for every time someone says this to me I could have retired long ago! This is an incredibly common obstacle to learning to paint. Got four minutes? Then watch the quick video below.

Do you loan out art reference books to help?

Yes. In fact I strongly encourage students to read around the subject, especially studying the works of the Old Masters.

How much does it cost?

The full cost is £20 per hour, no hidden extras, no minimum booking requirements. Just do as much or as little as you want. You can have one lesson, or keep going as long as you want.

Where to go from here

You can contact me now to book your first lesson. Or just call me on 852380 or on my mobile on  07797 746792. If you visit the Harbour Gallery (map here if you don't know where it is located) you can ask at the reception desk or just amble upstairs to see me and we'll take it from there.

See you soon!
